Some days the best adventures are the ones close to home. This trip to Jefferson City, Missouri, gave us a brand-new first: our very first escape room. Add a historic ice cream parlor to the end of the day, and you have a day trip that is truly worth the detour.
If you have ever wondered whether an escape room is fun for first-timers, here is our honest answer: yes, absolutely. Here is how our day went, plus a few tips if you want to try it yourself.

Arriving at Capital Escape
We booked our game at Capital Escape, tucked inside an unassuming brick building at 812 Madison Street. From the outside, you would never guess what is waiting inside. That is half the fun.

The lobby has so much personality. The check-in counter is covered top to bottom in stickers, with a whole wall of them behind it. There is a bright green lounge with a cozy couch, a drink fridge, and shelves of fun escape room T-shirts. We loved the “Riddle Roulette” gumball machine, where you grab a riddle to warm up your brain before your game.

Looking down the hallway at the rusted, industrial-style door to the rooms, the excitement started to build. We had no idea what we were walking into.

Inside the “Burn” Room: A Family Mystery in an Old Cabin
The moment the door closed, we were transported. We played Capital Escape’s “Burn” room, set inside an old, fire-damaged cabin, and the details were incredible. Charred ceilings, peeling damask wallpaper, cobwebs in every corner, and antique furniture made it feel like we had stepped back in time.

Everything was a possible clue. An old brick fireplace held a mantel full of treasures: a glass-domed clock, a ship in a bottle, a vintage tin, and black-and-white family photos. There was an antique hutch with locked drawers, a vintage sewing machine, a floral rocking chair, and a lamp tucked in the corner.

A screen on the wall counted down our 60 minutes, which kept the pressure on in the best way. There were four of us, and that turned out to be the perfect number. Everyone had something to search, something to notice, and an idea to share.

What surprised us most was how much teamwork it took. One person would spot a detail, another would remember something from across the room, and suddenly a lock would open. Those “aha!” moments were so satisfying.
We Escaped With Five Minutes to Spare
As the clock ticked down, the energy in the room picked up. We were piecing together the family’s story clue by clue, and every solved puzzle pushed us closer to the exit.
Then it happened. The final lock opened, and we escaped with five minutes left on the clock. For a group of first-timers, we were pretty proud of ourselves! We walked out laughing, high-fiving, and already talking about which room we want to try next.
A Fun Find at the Counter: Escape the City
At checkout, we spotted something we had never seen before. Capital Escape sells Escapely’s “Escape the City” kits, which turn a whole neighborhood into an escape game. You solve puzzles, hunt for real-world clues, and explore the city as you go.
The kit we saw was for downtown St. Louis, and a sign said Kansas City is coming soon. It would make a great gift for the adventurer in your life, or a fun excuse for your next road trip.

A Sweet Ending at Central Dairy
No celebration is complete without ice cream, so we headed just down Madison Street to Central Dairy. This Jefferson City landmark has been scooping from the same spot at 610 Madison Street since the 1930s, and it still has that old-fashioned ice cream parlor charm.

The parlor serves dozens of flavors of ice cream and sherbet, along with sundaes, banana splits, shakes, and malts. You can grab a window booth or take your treat outside. When we visited, people were enjoying their cones on the benches out front, and a gorgeous classic car was parked at the curb. It felt like a scene from a simpler time.

If you are passing through Jefferson City, this is a must-stop. Locals and road-trippers alike line up here, and now we know why.
Tips for Your First Escape Room
- Bring a small group. Four people was just right for us: enough eyes to search, without crowding the room.
- Talk out loud. Say what you find, even if it seems small. Someone else may have the missing piece.
- Search everything. Drawers, frames, books, and the backs of things all deserve a second look.
- Keep an eye on the clock. Check the timer now and then so you know when to pick up the pace.
- Ask for a hint if you get stuck. It keeps the fun going.
- Plan a treat afterward. Celebrating your escape (or your near miss) is half the fun.
