Sometimes the best road trips don’t require a packed itinerary. A pretty place to stop, something local to taste, and one completely unexpected roadside attraction can be more than enough.
This Missouri day trip delivered all three.
The day started in St. James, Missouri, with a visit to St. James Winery, followed by some time enjoying the beautiful outdoor surroundings nearby. Then, before heading home, there was one more stop to make—a detour to Uranus, Missouri, one of the quirkiest attractions along Historic Route 66.
And really, how could you drive by a place called Uranus without stopping?
First Stop: St. James Winery
Located in the Ozark Highlands of Missouri, St. James Winery makes an easy stop for travelers exploring this part of the state or traveling along the I-44 and Route 66 corridor.
The winery has been producing Missouri wines for decades and offers everything from its well-known sweet and fruit wines to dry and semi-dry varieties.
But you don’t have to be a serious wine enthusiast to enjoy stopping here.
Part of the appeal is simply slowing down for a while.
Visitors can explore the tasting room and shop, sample Missouri wines, and—depending on the timing of the visit—even arrange a cellar tour for a closer look at the winemaking process.
Nearby, the landscaped outdoor areas around Public House Brewing Company and The Gardens create an especially inviting place to linger.
Large shade trees, Adirondack chairs, colorful flowers and umbrella-covered tables make the area feel less like a quick roadside stop and more like a place where you could easily spend an afternoon.
It’s the kind of setting that makes you forget for a little while that you’re on a road trip at all.
A Missouri Stop Made for a Slow Afternoon
One of the things we love about exploring smaller destinations is discovering places that don’t require an elaborate plan.
St. James is one of those stops.
You could make the winery the focus of the day, combine it with lunch nearby, or simply use it as an interesting break while traveling through Missouri.
And then there’s Route 66.
Because just when the day seems perfectly peaceful and grown-up, Missouri gives you something completely different.
Next Stop: Uranus, Missouri
Yes. Uranus.
And yes, they know exactly what they’re doing with the name.
Located along Historic Route 66, Uranus, Missouri embraces classic roadside-attraction kitsch with absolutely no intention of taking itself too seriously.
Colorful signs, vintage vehicles, an old-fashioned jail façade, oversized ice-cream cones, Route 66 memorabilia and plenty of jokes turn the stop into part general store, part photo opportunity and part roadside oddity.
It’s bright. It’s silly. It’s over-the-top.
And that’s precisely why it’s fun.
You Can’t Leave Without Seeing the Fudge
One of the best-known stops here is the Uranus Fudge Factory and General Store.
Inside, you’ll find a large fudge counter filled with different flavors alongside candy, gifts, souvenirs and plenty more of the attraction’s signature humor.
Even the signs scattered throughout the property are part of the experience.
This isn’t the kind of place you rush through without looking around. Half the fun is noticing the little details, wandering through the different areas and discovering the next absurd thing they’ve decided to put on display.
A Little Route 66 Nostalgia
Underneath all the humor, Uranus also captures something we genuinely love about old-fashioned American road trips.
Historic Route 66 became famous partly because of places exactly like this—roadside attractions designed to convince travelers to pull over, stretch their legs and see something they couldn’t find anywhere else.
The vintage vehicles, Route 66 signs and retro roadside atmosphere make Uranus feel like a modern version of that tradition.
Is it sophisticated?
Absolutely not.
Is it memorable?
Definitely.
Is This Missouri Day Trip Worth the Detour?
We think so—especially because the two stops couldn’t be more different.
Start with wine, flowers and a relaxing outdoor setting in St. James.
Finish with fudge, Route 66 nostalgia and enough Uranus jokes to last the drive home.
That’s what makes a good detour.
It doesn’t always have to be a famous landmark or an elaborate vacation. Sometimes it’s simply finding two places along the road that give you a story to tell when you get home.
And this one certainly does.

If you’re traveling through this part of Missouri, give yourself enough time to enjoy both stops rather than treating them as quick photo opportunities. Check current winery tasting, tour and dining information before your visit, and leave a little extra time to wander around Uranus.
